Feni flooding set to ease as water levels drop in Selonia, Muhuri rivers

The waters of the Selonia and Muhuri rivers have started to ease in Feni after days of heavy rain flooded the district. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) believes the flooding situation in the district will improve.

In its regular bulletin on Saturday, the Water Development Board’s warning centre said that the Selonia and Muhuri were flowing below the danger level. This may continue for the next three days, causing the flooding in the district to improve.

However, it notes that there is still a possibility of moderate to moderately heavy rainfall in the basin for the next three days as well.

Due to the active monsoon and the formation of a low-pressure system, heavy rains have caused waterlogging in several districts of the country, including Feni, and raised the water levels of several rivers. The local administration estimates that some 34,000 people were trapped by the water, with many forced to go to shelters.

However, the flooding situation has not deteriorated since Friday, when the rain eased.

Now, updated information from the forecasting centre says that the water levels of all the major rivers of the country are flowing below the danger level. No significant heavy rainfall has been observed in the interior and upstream regions of the country over the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the water levels of the Ganga-Padma river is stable; which may continue for another day. The water levels of the river may increase in the next four days, but it is likely to remain below the danger level.

The FFWC says that there is a possibility of moderate to moderately heavy rainfall in this basin for the next five days.

The water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet are also decreasing and flowing below the danger level. The water level of these rivers may decrease over the next day and may increase in the following two days.

There is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in this region in the next day and moderate to heavy rainfall over the following two days.

The water levels of the Gomti, Feni, Halda, Matamuhari and Sangu rivers in Chattogram Division have decreased and are flowing below the danger level. The water level of the rivers may remain stable for the next day and increase over the following two days.

There is a possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in this basin for the next three days.

Meanwhile, the water level of the Brahmaputra River is stable and the water level of Jamuna River is increasing, which may remain stable for another day.

But the water level may decrease in the subsequent four days and may flow below the danger level. There is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in this basin for the next five days.
