Four derailed carriages of the Jamalpur Commuter train have been recovered in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon, allowing train service on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route to resume after seven and a half hours.
A five-member committee has been announced to investigate the accident.
The rescue train was able to recover the carriages around 4pm on Friday, said Mymensingh Railway Senior Assistant Executive Engineer Nazmul Hasan.
The carriages on the Dhaka-bound Jamalpur commuter train had derailed before it entered Gafargaon Railway Station around 9am.
Mymensingh Railway Station Superintendent Abdullah Al Harun said, “Just before entering Gafargaon station, there was a sudden loud noise and the four carriages behind the engine derailed. However, there were no casualties or major damage. This caused inconvenience to passengers as the Teesta Express train got stuck at Kaoraid station.”
He said if train service on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route is suspended, an alternative way to ease the pressure is to send some trains to Dhaka via Bhairab in Kishoreganj.
Harun also said that 20 pairs of trains run to different parts of the country via Mymensingh, carrying about 8,000 passengers. However, after frequent accidents, train passengers in this region are growing anxious.
Mymensingh Railway Senior Assistant Executive Engineer Nazmul Hasan said that a five-member investigation committee has been formed to uncover how the train coaches derailed. The committee has been asked to submit a report within three working days.
In response to the question of why trains are repeatedly derailing on this line, he said: "The railway line was built during the British period. There has been no major renovation since then. Due to this, trains are derailing more often. However, the current government has taken initiatives to repair the railway line. If that happens, such incidents will decrease."
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Railway Director (Public Relations) Anisur expressed his regret on behalf of Bangladesh Railway for the temporary inconvenience to the passengers in a notice.
After the recovery of the carriages, train movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway line started at 4:55pm through Teesta Express train no. 707, the notification also said.
