A cleaner has been injured after an Ansar member's airgun, being used to scare off birds, went off at Sylhet's Osmani International Airport.
Ansar member Mozammel Haque was removed from duty on Saturday afternoon, said Md Nazmus Sakib, assistant director of the Ansar and Village Defence Force (VDP).
The incident took place around 10am the same day near the airport's runway.
According to the Ansar and VDP, Haque and cleaner Md Rubel Mia had set off in a vehicle to carry out bird-scaring duties near the runway. While in the vehicle, Haque loaded a lead cartridge into the airgun.
The loaded airgun struck the door and fired as he stepped out of the vehicle, with the cartridge piercing the seat before hitting Rubel, who was seated in front, on the left side of his waist.
Rubel was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital immediately after the incident.
Doctors say he is now out of danger.
Osmani Airport Director Hafiz Ahmed said the shooting was accidental, not intentional.
"It happened as the Ansar member was stepping out of the vehicle to scare off birds. The injured worker is now out of danger," he added.
