A Dhaka court has sentenced Asif Shikdar to death for stabbing his friend, Manarat International University student Nasim Ahmed Emazuddin, to death nearly nine years ago in the capital.
The Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka Towhida Akter delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The court also slapped a Tk 50,000 fine on convict Asif, said bench assistant Tanzil Hossain Bhuiyan.
As Asif remains on the run, the court issued both a conviction warrant and an arrest warrant against him.
Nasim was stabbed to death outside his home in East Badda on Nov 5, 2017.
According to the case details, he was walking past a flexiload shop in a lane near East Badda Post Office around 9pm, when he heard a group shouting nearby and asked them to stop.
Md Ramzan, who was there, told Nasim they had been betting on a cricket match while watching it on television.
When Nasim told them not to bet or make a disturbance, an argument broke out. At one point, Asif slapped Ramzan.
Ramzan and several others then went to Asif’s home and threatened him.
Asif later called them and issued threats in return.
Around 9:30am the following day, Asif left home to go to the market. After coming downstairs, he stabbed Nasim.
The injured Nasim ran and collapsed at the foot of the building.
Family members rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The same day, Nasim's father Ali Ahammad Saifuddin, deputy vice-president of Green Delta Insurance Company Limited, filed a case at Badda Police Station, naming Asif, Ramzan and Abdur Rashid, along with three or four unidentified people, as suspects.
Following the investigation, Gulshan Zonal Team Inspector Abdus Sobhan submitted a chargesheet against Asif to the court on Sept 30, 2018.
Ramzan and Rashid were recommended for discharge after investigators found no evidence against them.
The court framed charges against Asif and ordered the trial to begin on Jan 19, 2022.
During the trial, testimony was recorded from 14 of the case's 20 witnesses.
A warrant was issued for Asif’s arrest on May 19, 2022 after he went into hiding.
After the hearing, the court convicted him and handed down the death sentence on Tuesday.
