Over 100 crude bombs detonated as two sides clash in Madaripur

No one has been detained over the incident, but four motorcycles have been seized by law enforcers

At least four people have been injured in a clash stemming from a power struggle in Madaripur. Over 100 crude bombs were detonated amid the violence.

The clash lasted for three hours, from 8pm to 11pm on Saturday, in “Notun Madaripur” village in the Sadar Upazila, according to Md Jahangir Alam, Madaripur additional superintendent of police.

Joint security forces went to the area when the incident was reported and brought the situation under control.

Those injured in the clash are village residents Sajib Howlader, Rony Munshi, Rana Bepari, and Md Rashed.

Citing witnesses, police said that there had been a feud over control of “Notun Madaripur” village between residents Akhtar Howlader and Hasan Munshi for a long time.

As part of the rivalry, 10-15 young men involved on Munshi’s side attacked Akhtar supporter Rana in front of the Char Kukrail Judge Court area on Saturday evening. Rana’s right arm was broken in the attack.

When news of the incident spread, both sides gathered with makeshift weapons and clashed. Hand-made explosives were detonated in the area, sparking fear among locals. The Army, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion, and police personnel eventually went to the scene and calmed the situation.

Additional SP Jahangir said, “It hasn’t been possible to detain anyone yet. However, four motorcycles have been seized. We are taking the next legal steps over the incident.”

Additional police have been deployed in the area, the police official said.
