Mother and son among three dead in septic tank accident

A woman accidentally fell into a septic tank under construction and her son and another man died while attempting to rescue her

Three people have died in a septic tank accident in Rangpur’s Mithapukur Upazila.

The incident occurred at Dhap Udaypur village in Gopalpur Union around 6am on Thursday, said Ferdous Wahid, chief of Mithapukur Police Station.

The dead were identified as Delowara Begum, 55, her son Huda Mia, 30, and Iblul Mia, 35.

“Delowara was attempting to collect some taro leaves when she slipped and fell into a septic tank that was under construction,” OC Ferdous said. “Huda and Iblul went down to try and rescue her.”

“There was no word from any of them for a long time, so the matter was reported to the Mithapukur Fire Service.”

“Two units of the Fire Service then went to the scene, recovered the bodies, and turned them over to their families.”

The familes have yet to file a formal complaint over the matter, the police official said.

“The incident occurred due to a lack of caution,” he said.
