Police have arrested Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, a long-time advisor to deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina who has fled to India.
He was detained from the capital's Gulshan on Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Obaidur Rahman said.
No information was immediately available about the charges he was arrested on.
Former bureaucrat Tawfiq had been the power, energy and mineral resources advisor to Hasina since the Awami League government came to power in 2009.
He went into hiding after Hasina resigned in the face of a civil uprising spearheaded by students on Aug 5.
Former law minister Anisul Huq, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni, Hasina’s advisor Salman F Rahman, former deputy speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku, former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and former deputy minister Arif Khan Joy were arrested earlier.
Police have questioned them following their arrests in various murder cases.
Meanwhile, former additional attorney general Md Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League Advisory Council member Riaz Mahmud Aynal were also arrested on Tuesday as they attempted to cross the border illegally, according to a statement issued by the Police Headquarters.
Both individuals are named suspects in separate murder cases filed at the Adabor Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, or DMP, and the Basan Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, respectively.
