DMCH says none of those injured in Inqilab Moncho clashes hit by gunfire

The hospital director says none of those brought in had injuries serious enough for admission

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) authorities have said none of those injured in clashes between police and Inqilab Moncho activists suffered gunshot wounds.

Hospital Director Brig Gen Md Asaduzzaman said there was also no one among the injured who required hospital admission.

The statement came after claims circulated on social media that the platform’s Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber had been shot.

Earlier, both the interim government and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said law-enforcing agencies did not use any firearms while dispersing the protest on Friday afternoon.

In the evening, DMCH Police Outpost chief Md Faruk said: “There are injury marks above Jaber’s left knee. Three or four people are being treated with similar injuries.

“In total, 22 to 23 people have come here,” he added,

Those receiving treatment include Jaber, Fatima Tasnim Zuma, spokesperson of the platform’s Dhaka University unit and former DUCSU editor for Liberation War affairs, and Salahuddin Ammar, general secretary of RUCSU.

Police said several others, including Monir, Faisal, Joy, Julkar, Mosharraf, Niloy, Anik, Umar, Rahat, Russell, Ahad, Mahin, Azad, Shamim, Sohel, Shawon, Jabed and Shamim -- all identified by single names, were treated in the emergency department.

Brig Gen Asaduzzaman said, “We did not find anyone among those who came for treatment who had been injured by gunfire.

“Some of the injured suffered injuries from tear gas exposure, some sustained muscle injuries from baton charges, and a few had minor cuts.”

Stressing that none of those brought in had injuries severe enough to warrant admission, he added: “We are providing treatment and releasing them. Many of them have already left.”
