Police have rescued a newborn from a drain in Khagrachhari.

The child was later admitted to the Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.

The newborn was found in a drain behind Raju Boarding in East Shantinagar around 11:30pm on Monday, according to police.

"Around 11:30 pm, locals saw a newborn lying in the drain and informed the police station. Later, the police rescued the child and took him to the hospital," said Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station chief Md Abdul Baten Mridha.

"The newborn is currently undergoing treatment. The incident has been reported to the Sadar Upazila Social Services Office. They will decide on the next steps."

The child is in good health, said Ripal Bappi Chakma, resident medical officer (RMO) of Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.
