Mushfiq Uddin Togor, who served time for the murder of BUET student Sabekun Nahar Sony, now faces fresh charges under the Arms Act after illegal weapons and ammunition were recovered from a Dhaka flat.

RAB-3 Deputy Assistant Director (Company Commander) Md Khalekuzzaman filed the case on Friday afternoon, confirmed Lalbagh Police Sub-Inspector Matiar Rahman Bulbul.

Togor was arrested on Thursday afternoon from Azimpur in Dhaka. According to the RAB, he had been smuggling illegal firearms from the country’s border regions and distributing them across the capital.

The 50-year-old was released from Kashimpur Cental Jail on Aug 20, 2020, after completing his sentence in the Sony murder case. Since then, the RAB claims, he has been involved in arms trading.

The case says the RAB officers raided a flat in Azimpur’s China Building Lane after receiving information about drug sales. Togor was found inside a three-room flat. As he attempted to flee, RAB personnel detained him.

During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to possessing firearms. A foreign-made revolver, a magazine, several bullets, masks, and a mobile phone were recovered from his room.

Togor could not provide any valid documents for the firearm. The case also alleges that he had been committing crimes across Dhaka while “wearing masks”.
