A man has been accused of hacking another man to death in Nilphamari’s Sadar Upazila over conducting an “extramarital relationship” with his mother.
Although the alleged killer has fled, police have detained his mother, father, and brother.
The incident occurred at Kisamat Dogachi village in the Upazila’s Tupamari Union around 10:30pm on Thursday, according to Faruk Ahmed, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle).
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Motiul Islam aka Motibul, a local resident. He leaves behind three daughters and a son.
Motiul had been involved in an extramarital relationship with Sahera Banu, 40, the wife of local resident Ekramul Haque and mother of three. A few days ago, Sahera left her family to stay with Motiul.
The dispute was later resolved locally and Sahera returned to her family. However, Sahera and Motiul did not cut off contact, leading to conflict.
On Thursday night, Sahera’s eldest son, 23-year-old Alamin Islam, saw Motiul near the house. They became embroiled in an argument and, at one point, Alamin struck Motiul in the neck with a sickle used for cutting tobacco.
Motiul was critically injured and died on the spot. Upon hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and Alamin fled.
ABM Faizul Islam, Nilphamari additional superintendent of police (crime and ops), additional SP Faruk, and Zillur Rahman, chief of Nilphamari Sadar Police Station, inspected the scene after the incident was repoted.
Faruk said Alamin is absconding and law enforcers are working to arrest him. Immediately after the incident, police arrested his father Ekramul, his mother Sahera, and younger brother.
The body has been recovered and sent to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem, the police official added.
