An ambulance transporting a dead body in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar Upazila has been attacked by robbers, leaving nine people injured.

The incident occurred around 1am on Friday in the Upazila's Tilpara area, according to Khairul Alam, chief of Nasirnagar Police Station.

The victims claim the robbers beat up the dead person’s family members in the ambulance and looted Tk 50,000 in cash and 10 mobile phones.

The injured include ambulance driver Firuz Mia, vehicle owner Khalil Mia, and relatives of the deceased Russel Mia, Salek Mia, Nahid Mia, Alamgir Mia, Md Salauddin, Aleya Begum and Ali Newaz Mia. All of them have received treatment at local medical facilities.

Police and witnesses said that the dead man, 70-year-old Sabdar Ali from Mukbulpur village, suffered from cancer and was admitted to the Mirpur Ahsania Cancer Hospital in Dhaka a few days ago. He died on Thursday night while in hospital care.

His relatives were returning home with his mortal remains in an ambulance when robbers ambushed them.

The assailants blocked the road using tree branches before vandalising the ambulance and assaulting the group inside the vehicle.

They even struck Sabdar's body with improvised weapons, the family alleged.

Sabdar’s son Alamgir Mia said, “We can bear the fact they robbed us. But hitting my father’s dead body is something we cannot accept.”

OC Khairul Alam said the incident occurred in a Haor (wetland) area. "The robbers took advantage of the secluded nature of the area, with no houses nearby. A police team usually stays there until 10pm. After that, other teams patrol the area rather than staying in one place.”

While the police have yet to determine the extent of the losses in the robbery, they will take necessary legal steps after an investigation, Khairul said.
