A public prosecutor in Patuakhali has been accused of attempting to bribe a judge by sending bundles of cash to her residence, leading to the suspension of his bar association membership.

The allegation was lodged with the Dhaka Bar Association’s secretary by Nilufar Shirin, senior district judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Patuakhali.

District Bar Association President Humayun Kabir confirmed that prosecutor Md Ruhul Amin’s membership had been suspended, adding that he was given seven days to explain his conduct.

In her written complaint, Judge Shirin said Ruhul had repeatedly called her mobile phone to recommend bail in a tribunal case.

On Wednesday morning, she alleged, he sent Tk 50,000 in cash along with case documents through her domestic aide.

She also accused him of lobbying for the defence in a rape case involving the daughter of a July Uprising martyr.

“I felt deeply insulted and enraged at this attempt to bribe me,” the judge wrote, noting that she had shown the packet of cash to the bar association’s president, secretary and the district’s public prosecutor, all of whom expressed outrage and advised her not to dismiss the matter.

Copies of the complaint were also sent to the law ministry, the bar association leadership and the district’s public prosecutor.

Ruhul said, “It is a matter of grave shame that a public prosecutor, who is meant to represent the state, tried to bribe a judge on behalf of the defence. At an emergency meeting, his membership was suspended, and he was asked to respond in writing within seven days.”

District Public Prosecutor Mojibur Rahman Totan said the bar association acted upon receiving the judge’s complaint, and the Dhaka Bar Association would take further action after investigation.

Amin has denied the allegations, telling reporters: “I had no involvement with sending any money. Since becoming a public prosecutor, conspiracies have been hatched against me. I am a victim of such a plot.”
