The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested a store employee over a double murder in Dhaka’s Gulshan. The law enforcers say that the detainee killed his employer after they argued over his salary and killed a co-worker who witnessed the crime.
The RAB held a press conference in Dhaka on Wednesday after arresting store employee Md Rumon from Chattogram.
RAB spokesman Lt Col Munim Ferdous said: “Rumon has confessed to the crime and two others are involved in the murders.”
On Saturday, the mutilated bodies of Rafiqul Islam, 60, and store assistant Sabbir Hossain, 15, were recovered from an empty plot of land on Gulshan’s Road No. 108.
Rafiqul was the caretaker of the land and also ran a tea stall. Rafiqul and Sabbir used to live in the shop on that empty plot of land.
Rumon, 27, worked at Rafiqul’s store. He had been hired only four or five days before the murder.
Rumon hails from Kishoreganj. He used to farm as well as work as a brick kiln worker at his village home. But he came to Dhaka a couple of years ago to start work in Uttara.
Citing Rafiqul’s son Bappi Islam, Lt Col Ferdous said that on Sept 26, Rafiqul closed his shop around 8pm and spoke to Bappi on the phone.
The following day, his family members were unable to reach him on his phone. On Sept 28, the family came to Gulshan around 8:30am, broke open the lock on Rafiqul’s door and found the bloody bodies wrapped in the bedsheets.
“In the initial interrogation after his arrest, Rumon said that Sabbir had been working at Rafiqul’s shop for the past month. On hearing that Sabbir would be leaving the job, Rumon contacted an acquaintance and applied to be his replacement, taking on a salary of Tk 5,000 with room and board.”
“After he started work, Rumon argued with Rafiqul several times over the low salary and management of the shop. In order to teach him a lesson, Rumon planned to steal his money and valuables from the shop.”
On Sept 26, after dinner, Rumon went to bed with Sabbir and Rumon in the house.
“According to his plan, Rumon hit Rafiqul on the head, neck, and body with a sharp weapon around 2am. Sabbir woke up and witnessed the incident and Rumon struck him on several parts of the head and body. He made sure they were dead and wrapped the bodies in the bedsheets.”
“Then Rumon put cash, a coffee machine, and some valuables from the house in a sack. Around 7am, he went to the airport area and rented a pickup truck with the goods from the store. He then took the bus to Kishoreganj’s Katiadi with his stolen goods. There he went into hiding at his sister’s house.”
Rumon hid the stolen goods at the house of a relative, the RAB says.
Afterwards, Rumon went to the house of a relative in Chattogram’s Halishahar. RAB personnel arrested him there.
