Formal charges have been filed against former state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder and 18 others in a case over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising in Dhaka’s Mirpur in 2024.
The charges were submitted to the registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said.
Among the notable accused are former Dhaka-16 MP Mohammad Ilias Uddin Mollah and Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil. The prosecution has not yet disclosed the names of the remaining accused.
Prosecutor Tamim told the media that formal charges had been filed against Kamal, Ilias and 17 others over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising in the Mirpur area.
He said the charges allege that more than 50 innocent, unarmed students and members of the public were shot dead in the Mirpur-10 roundabout and several areas of Pallabi on Jul 4 and Jul 5, and Jul 18 and Jul 19.
Members of law enforcing agencies and armed cadres of the local Awami League were allegedly involved in the killings, according to the charges.
The prosecutor said the incidents over those several days had been described in a single charge. The formal charges also detail the role of each of the 19 accused and how they were allegedly involved in committing the crimes.
After a lengthy investigation, the investigation agency submitted its report to the Office of the Chief Prosecutor. The report was subsequently scrutinised before the formal charges were filed with the tribunal, prosecutor Tamim said.
