The final voter list for the upcoming general election, slated for February, is set to be published on Nov 18.
Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that the voter list has been updated three times this year ahead of the elections. The list was previously updated on Mar 2 and Aug 31. The final list in November will include those who will turn 18 on Oct 31.
New and excluded voters were added in the updates, while the deceased were dropped. Now, Bangladesh’s total voter count stands at over 126.3 million.
In the latest update, citizens born on or before Oct 31, 2007, are being given the opportunity to cast their ballots in the next parliamentary elections.
A letter signed by EC Senior Assistant Secretary Nasir Uddin Chowdhury on Thursday stated the schedule for the draft of the third updated to the list and the schedule for the final list’s publication. Instructions have been sent in letters to Thana election officers and registration officers.
The new schedule states:
>> The draft list will be published on Nov 1.
>> The last date for filing claims, objections and corrections to this list is Nov 16.
>> All of these claims will be settled on Nov 17.
>> The final voter list will be published on Nov 18.
The next parliamentary elections will be held with these newly added voters. Preparations are under way to announce a schedule for the vote in December so that the election can be held in the first half of February, before Ramadan.
The constituency-wise voter list, polling stations, polling booths and all related information will be printed. They will also be written on CDs and sent to the field level. The actual number of total voters in the country will be known before the schedule is announced.
