A mob has beaten up a local journalist in Chattogram’s Sitakunda before handing him over to the police. He has since been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The incident took place on Sunday night in the Rail Gate area of Sitakunda Municipality.
The injured journalist has been identified as Liton Kumar Chowdhury, the Sitakunda correspondent for the national Daily Janakantha and former general secretary of the Sitakunda Press Club.
Mojibur Rahman, chief of Sitakunda Police Station, told bdnews24.com that a few people brought Liton to the police station at night. No cases are filed against him and he was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
A video of the attack has gone viral on social media.

The video shows a mob grabbing the journalist, and punching and beating him with their fists. The attackers are heard saying that they had caught a “big Awami League agent”, alleging that Liton had “destroyed people’s lives by spreading fake news”. They continue to beat him until they draw blood. Eventually, one of them says that Liton should be taken to the police station.
Liton’s son Rakesh Chowdhury said his father had rented a house in town for Rakesh’s studies and lived there with his family. However, the family had gone to their ancestral home for the Kali Puja.
Describing the attack, Rakesh said his father had been standing in front of the house looking at his mobile phone on Monday night when a man came over, called others to the spot, and began to beat home. They also attempted to take Liton away as they beat him. Rakesh said he and his older brother were beaten when they attempted to protect their father.
Liton was first taken to the Upazila Health Complex with injuries and sent from there to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Sitakunda Press Club President SF Forkan Abu demanded the attackers be brought to justice, saying that they are known criminals who could be identified clearly from the video footage.
