Police said three pistols have been recovered from Pirerbagh in Dhaka’s Mirpur, where the shooting broke out early Friday.

It has been confirmed that two of those firearms are stolen service pistols issued to officers of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Inspector Jalal Uddin of the Detective Branch or DB was fatally shot early on Tuesday during a raid in Mirpur.

On Friday, the DB conducted a raid at Pirerbagh around 2am, according to Sub-Inspector Akhlima Akter of the Mirpur police. “As soon as the raid unfolded, criminals opened fire, when the police retaliated.”

A man, estimated to be 25 years old, was found with gunshot wounds at the scene after the shooting. He was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead, said the police officer.

On Wednesday, police said a manhunt was on for one Hasan, who they have
as the perpetrator in the killing of Inspector Jalal.

A senior DB officer told bdnews24.com that they suspect the shootout victim to be Hasan.

“The description matches with the photograph of Hasan with police, but it can be confirmed once his relatives identify the body,” said Deputy Commissioner Md Mokhlesur Rahman.

In the early hours of Mar 19, a DB team raided a four-storey building in Pirerbagh area as part of its investigations into the theft at houses of two police officers in January, when their firearms were stolen.

A police officer, who took part in the raid, said Jalal got on a cornice of the building to ask its residents to open the door when no one responded to door knocks.

Jalal fell off the cornice when the criminals hurled bricks, said the DB officer, who asked not to be named.

He said the others managed to take cover when the criminals opened fire, but Jalal was shot and later declared dead at the Square Hospital.

Forensic tests revealed Jalal suffered two bullet injuries in his head.

No suspect was found in the house when law-enforcers entered after reinforcements arrived, according to police.

DB Deputy Commissioner Rahman said the stolen service pistols were recovered during Friday’s raid.

“Three pistols were found at the scene of shooting and two of them are stolen service pistols of Sergeants Rashid and Rana.”
