A top police officer, requesting anonymity, told bdnews24.com that they were searching for ‘Hasan’, 24, who he said along with four to five others took part in the killing in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The officer, who also took part in the operation at Pirerbagh area, said they also fired 30 to 40 shots in retaliation, but the miscreants fled through the back door of the raided building.

Police detained Hasan’s wife and three other members of the family for questioning.

Hasan lives in one of the three rooms erected on the top of the one-storey building. Police are also questioning other tenants of the building, but they seem to have no connection with Hasan, the police officer said.

A DB team of 10 went to the house as part of an investigation into the theft of guns of two traffic police sergeants in Mirpur on Jan 10 following information given by a suspect arrested several days ago.

The police officer said Jalal got on a cornice of the building to ask its residents to open the door when no one responded to door knocks.

Jalal fell off the cornice when the miscreants threw some bricks, the police detective said.

He said he and the others managed to take cover when the miscreants opened fire, but Jalal was shot.

They took him to the Square Hospital where he died.

A forensic doctor said Jalal suffered two bullet injuries in his head.

No suspect was found in the house when police entered it after reinforcements arrived, the detective said, adding he suspected the miscreants fled through the back alley of the building.

Police are checking whether Hasan had any case against him.

After a Namaz-e-Janaza or funeral prayers of Jalal at the Rajarbagh Police Lines, Inspector General of Police Jabed Patwary told reporters: “Jalal Uddin sacrificed his life in the line of duty. He was an honest officer. We will try our best to bring his killers to justice.”
