The incident took place in the Pirerbag neighbourhood early on Tuesday, according to Md Wahiduzzaman, an inspector at Mirpur Police Station.

Md Jalal Uddin was shot in the head. He was declared dead after being rushed to the Square Hospital, he said.

The gang members managed to flee through a backdoor of the four-storey building, said DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, who visited the scene.

“Police besieged the house on a tip-off that armed miscreants were inside. They opened fire from the rooftop prompting police to retaliate. Jalal Uddin was hit by a bullet.”

“Police detained a woman while raiding the house where the criminals were hiding. Four others have been detained from an adjacent building for questioning,” he told reporters.
