Former commerce minister Tipu Munshi has been arrested in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
The Rapid Action Battilion, or RAB, announced his arrest in a statement around 1:30am on Wednesday.
His detention follows a series of arrests and legal actions against Awami League ministers and MPs since the government’s fall on Aug 5.
Tipu was picked up from the residence of Salahuddin Ahmed, head of M&J Group, in Gulshan, said Lt Col Md Munim Ferdous, the spokesperson for the elite poilce unit.
The arrest has been made in connection with charges brought in a case in Rangpur, according to Munim.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, party president Sheikh Hasina fled to India, and many leaders went into hiding.
Among those in hiding, several former ministers and party leaders have been arrested in recent days.
They are being interrogated on remand in connection with cases of violence and casualties related to the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
Tipu, a prominent AL leader, was also in hiding after the party's ousting.
Freedom fighter Tipu was elected for the fourth time from Rangpur-4 constituency in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
After winning the parliamentary elections in 2018, Sheikh Hasina gave him the responsibility of the commerce ministry for three straight terms.
Despite winning in his seat in the 12th parliamentary election, Tipu, who faced criticism over commodity prices, could not secure a place in the cabinet.
