Police have arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League on allegations that he looted around 1.5 tonnes of sugar by holding a truck driver hostage in Sylhet’s Beanibazar Upazila.
The arrestee, Jahidul Haque Tahmid, was the general secretary of BCL’s Beanibazar Upazila unit.
The ruling party’s student wing dissolved Beanibazar Upazila and municipality unit committees after the allegations against Jahidul had surfaced.
Police made the arrest at Nidonpur village on Sunday morning, said Debdulal Dhar, chief of Beanibazar Police Station.
He said police sent Jahidul to court, seeking his remand for quizzing.
Badrul Islam, the owner of the sugar, filed a case at the police station after the sugar was allegedly looted in the Charkhai area on Jun 8.
Badrul named 11 suspects and several unidentified people in the case.
Debdulal said police were searching for the other accused.
