Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal have staged a protest procession and rally in response to the murder of 25-year-old Dhaka University (DU) student Shahriar Alam Sammo at Suhrawardy Udyan.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of the university’s vice-chancellor and the proctor.

Shahriar, who served as the literary and publications secretary of the BNP's student affiliate Chhatra Dal at DU, was stabbed to death while riding a motorbike through Suhrawardy Udyan on Tuesday.

In the wake of the incident, Chhatra Dal activists briefly rallied outside the VC Chattar after midnight on Tuesday, chanting slogans against the university administration and the vice-chancellor.

At the rally, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said the interim government was not appointed to protect any particular group.

Ganesh Chandra Roy Shahosh, president of the Chhatra Dal DU unit, said: "We urge the government to remove the VC and proctor as soon as possible. Otherwise, we will be compelled to remove this interim government.”

The unit's General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon also demanded the VC's resignation.

Shahriar was a student of the university’s Institute of Education and Research from the 2018-19 academic session. He resided at the Sir AF Rahman Hall on campus.
