A tribunal in Jamalpur has sentenced three people to death and fined them Tk 200,000 each for gang-raping a 16-year-old girl. Another suspect has been acquitted in the case.

Judge Md Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon, said state lawyer Md Fazlul Haque.

The death-row convicts are Shipon, 21, Ibrahim 27, and Yusuf Ali, 22 from Shildah of Belgachha Union in Islampur Upazila. Md Sadiq, another local, was acquitted.

State lawyer Fazlul said Sadiq was involved in a romantic relationship with a 16-year-old girl the area. On the night of Apr 19, 2024, Sadiq called the girl to a field next to his house and raped her after promising her marriage.

At that time, Shipon, Ibrahim and Yusuf, were lying in wait and confronted them. Sadiq then ran away.

The three of them threatened to expose the girl’s situation and gangraped her.

They then dropped the girl off at her house. The father of the victim filed a case with Islampur Police Station on May 5 of that year, accusing four people, including Sadiq.

After hearing the testimonies of nine witnesses in the case, the judge delivered the verdict on Thursday in the presence of the accused.

State lawyer Fazlul said the victim gave a statement to the court that she had physical relations with Sadiq with her consent. For this reason, the court acquitted him.

The state has expressed its satisfaction with the verdict.

Advocates Fazlul and Rozina Akhter represented the prosecution, while Aman Ullah Akash, Rafiur Rahman and Azizul Haque appeared for the suspects.
