A Dhaka court has placed retired lieutenant general Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), on a three-day remand for questioning in police custody in connection with the 2022 killing of BNP activist Mokbul Hossain.

The order was passed by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid following an application by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Thursday.

Mamun was initially picked up by a DB team from the capital's Mirpur in the early hours of Mar 26.

Since his arrest, he has undergone 14 days of interrogation across three phases in a separate murder case involving the death of one Delwar Hossain during the July student-led uprising.

On Thursday, following the completion of his previous remand, DB Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin produced Mamun before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain.

While the court denied his bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail in the Delwar murder case, he was subsequently shown arrested in the Mokbul murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favour of the fresh remand, while defence counsel Morshed Hossain Shahin moved for bail, which was ultimately rejected.

The case centres on the death of Mokbul, a BNP activist who was fatally shot on Dec 7, 2022.

The incident occurred during a police raid on the BNP's central office in Naya Paltan, just days before the party’s scheduled mass rally.

The raid, allegedly led by high-profile police officials such as Harun-or-Rashid and Biplob Kumar Sarker, resulted in widespread vandalism and clashes.

Following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, a formal complaint was lodged on Sept 30 by one Mahfuzur Rahman.

The murder case names former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 255 others as suspects.
