The murder of Pallabi Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria involved not only political rivalry and a struggle for dominance, but also “large financial transactions”, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said.

Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Alam, commander of RAB-4, provided the information on Wednesday afternoon at a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar, citing statements from two arrested suspects.

The killing, he said, was a planned operation. The two arrested are Monir Hossain, alias Sohel or Pata Sohel, 30, and Md Sujon, alias Bukpora Sujon, 35.

Monir has been identified in the murder case as the planner and instigator, while Sujon, who is named in 18 separate cases, has been described by RAB as a “suspect”.

The murder followed a political feud and previous enmity over establishing dominance, said Mahbub, who also claimed a large sum was paid for the murder.

The suspects arrested in the case are also wanted in cases related to robbery, murder, illegal possession of drugs and arms.

“They have been leading criminal gangs across Dhaka city by evading arrests,” said Mahbub.

Sujon is a source of arms used in Mirpur, he said.

Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria was shot dead at point-blank at 7pm on Monday by three individuals who entered a hardware store in Block C near the old Pallabi Police Station wearing masks and helmets.

He was declared dead at around 8pm when taken to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital with gunshot wounds.

The assailants also shot a battery-run autorickshaw driver, Arif Hossain, while fleeing after shooting the Jubo Dal leader. The driver is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Jony Bhuiyan, 25, whom locals caught immediately after the murder, reportedly confessed to the crime.

Kibria’s wife, Sabiha Akhter Dina, filed a case with Pallabi Police against five people in connection with the murder.
