Two dead after head-on collision between truck, pickup in Gazipur

A poultry trader is among the victims after the pickup van he was riding on crashed into a truck on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway

Two people have been killed when a truck ploughed into a pickup van in Gazipur Sadar Upazila.

The accident occurred around 7am on Friday near the Fu-Wang Foods factory in the Hotapara area along the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, according to Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman of Salna Highway Police Station.

The victims were identified as 35-year-old Raju Mia, the conductor of the pickup, and 40-year-old Ziarul Islam, a poultry trader.

"The poultry trader was heading to Dhaka on a pickup van when it collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction," SI Habibur said, citing witnesses.

The front end of the pickup was wrecked on impact, killing Raju and Ziarul on the spot, according to him.

"The driver fled the scene after the collision. Police later went to the scene and recovered the bodies."

The bodies will be sent to Gazipur's Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the policeman added.
