Sultan Muhammed Mansur Ahmed, a former MP and former vice president of the Dhaka University Central Students Union, has been taken into custody by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
He was detained early on Monday after he arrived from Canada, according to Rezaul Karim Mollik, additional DB commissioner.
“We have received some allegations against him and have brought him in for questioning based on them. We will scrutinise the allegations,” he said.
Mansur entered politics while studying at Sylhet MC College. He became involved in the Chhatra League at the time.
He became known in the Eighties for his part in the Chhatra League leadership. He was the only Chhatra League president to become the DUCSU VP post-independence.
Mansur was also among those who protested after the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Aug 15, 1975.
Though he was a Chhatra League president and also a former organising secretary of the Awami League, Mansur was labelled a ‘reformist’ after a state of emergency was declared in 2007 and lost his affiliation with the party.
In 2018, ahead of the 11th national parliamentary elections, he joined Kamal Hossain’s Gono Forum. The Gono Forum allied itself with the BNP under the Jatiya Oikya Front. Mansur was elected as the MP from the Moulvibazar-2 constituency under the rice paddy sheaf symbol of the BNP, which was used by the members of the alliance in the polls.
