Former shipping minister Shajahan Khan has been sent to jail before the end of his seven-day remand due to illness.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider Kamal issued the order to send him to jail on Sunday.

Dhanmondi Model Police Station Investigating Officer and Sub Inspector Md Kokhon Mia filed an application to move Shajahan to jail after he fell sick during his remand period.

After the hearing, the court ordered to send him to jail considering his physical condition.

On Sept 6, the court granted police permission to interrogate Shajahan for seven days over the killing of a young man in Dhaka’s Jigatala during the mass uprising.

Shajahan was taken into custody from Dhanmondi on Sept 5.

A member of the Awami League Presidium, Shajahan is also the executive president of the Bangladesh Sramik Federation.

He was elected to the Madaripur-2 parliamentary seat in 1986 as an independent candidate. Since then, he has been elected as the Awami League MP of the constituency in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024.
