Rony was seeking to run for the constituency as a BNP candidate after joining the party recently.
Returning Officer and Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner Motiul Islam Chowdhury rejected Rony’s application for nomination for the Golachipa-Doshmina constituency because the affidavit the former MP provided had no signature.
Now the BNP has only one candidate, Hasan Mamun for the Patuakhali seat as the returning officer also rejected the nomination of the other BNP candidate Shahjahan Khan.
Mamun, a former Dhaka University unit chief of BNP’s student wing the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, is a member of the party’s central executive committee now.
The three other candidates whose nominations have been cleared by the returning officer are the Awami League’s SM Shahjada, the Jatiya Party’s Maulana Md Saiful Islam and Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Mohammad Kamal Khan.
Shahjada, a former leader of the party’s student front the Bangladesh Chhatra League, is a nephew of Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda.
AKM Zahangir Hossain, a former general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the Awami League’s student front, was elected MP from Patuakhali-3 in 1991 and 1996.
Zahangir was dropped from the party’s list of candidates in 2008 after he was marked a reformist during the military-controlled caretaker government.
Rony emerged as the Awami League candidate and won in that election. He lost to Zahangir when the Awami League picked the former BCL leader for the last election.
Rony has not been an active Awami League politician since 2014, but he has regularly appeared in TV talk shows.
