US President Donald Trump is set to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion during his visit for the UN General Assembly, The New York Times reports, citing the mayor’s office.

A spokeswoman for the mayor confirmed that the discussions, scheduled for Monday, will “focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers”.

The engagement marks the president’s first visit to Mamdani’s home turf, following two previous meetings in Washington that forged an unexpectedly cordial relationship between the ideological adversaries.

High on the agenda is expected to be municipal infrastructure, specifically Mamdani’s ambitious pitch for Sunnyside Yard -- an 72.84-hectare development requiring an estimated $21 billion in federal grants to construct a housing platform over Queens rail lines.

Federal deportation policy also remains a critical point of friction, with the mayor previously accusing the White House administration of criminalising immigrant communities.

Presidential visits to Gracie Mansion are historically rare, with previous official calls made by Harry S Truman in 1949, John F Kennedy in 1962, and Ronald Reagan in 1981.

The upcoming summit reflects a striking shift in rhetoric for two figures who previously engaged in sharp personal invective, but have recently collaborated on localised matters, including the recent release of a detained Columbia University student.
