House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has held an undisclosed meeting with Jared Kushner, former senior advisor and son-in-law to US President Donald Trump, to discuss potential legislative common ground as the midterm campaign season heats up, The New York Times reported.

According to five sources familiar with the matter, the sit-down took place at a private location in New York City arranged by a mutual friend.

The meeting highlighted how key figures around Trump are laying groundwork to manage a potential shift in power, with Jeffries positioned to become speaker if Democrats regain the House majority.

Kushner and Jeffries discussed housing, immigration, and cost-of-living pressures, according to the report.

However, Kushner reportedly suggested that Jeffries should meet directly with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

The two have maintained contact since collaborating on criminal justice reform during Trump's first presidency.

The quiet outreach contrasts sharply with public midterms rhetoric, where Trump has labelled Jeffries a "thug" and Jeffries has pledged aggressive oversight of the administration.

Aides for both sides declined to officially comment, while Jeffries released a statement emphasising that any cooperation hinges on Republicans addressing affordability concerns.
