Mikel Oyarzabal once again broke England hearts at Wembley, Croatia marked Slaven Bilic’s return with victory, while Switzerland, Finland and Luxembourg all opened their Nations League campaigns with wins on Saturday.
Spain beat England 3-2 in League A, with Oyarzabal scoring the decisive goal after the hosts had taken a 2-1 lead.
Oyarzabal Sinks England Again
Lamine Yamal put the world champions ahead inside two minutes before Anthony Gordon equalised for England.
Harry Kane then headed England in front, with the ball taking a deflection off Marc Cucurella, but later missed a penalty that could have extended the hosts’ advantage.
Substitute Alex Baena pulled Spain level before setting up Oyarzabal, who struck the winner 16 minutes from time.
It was another decisive Wembley moment for Oyarzabal, who also scored the winner against England in the Euro 2024 final.
Croatia Edge Czechia on Bilic Return
Croatia also began their League A campaign with a 2-1 win away to Czechia.
Luka Modric opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Adam Karabec brought the hosts level.
Marco Pasalic then headed in Ivan Perisic’s cross to restore Croatia’s lead and secure victory in Bilic’s first match back in charge.
Switzerland Cruise Past North Macedonia
Switzerland made an impressive start to their first League B campaign with a 3-0 victory away to North Macedonia.
Remo Freuler and Zeki Amdouni struck before half-time as the visitors took control, with Amdouni going on to score twice in the match.
Pohjanpalo Hits Hat-Trick for Finland
Finland produced the biggest win of the night with a 7-0 rout of San Marino in League C.
Joel Pohjanpalo scored the first hat-trick of this Nations League campaign, while Leo Walta also struck twice in the emphatic victory.
Luxembourg Stun Bulgaria
Luxembourg provided one of the more eye-catching results in League C, coming from behind to beat Bulgaria 2-1 away.
The victory gave Luxembourg three points from their opening Group C4 fixture.
Scotland Held in Slovenia
Scotland opened their League B campaign with a goalless draw away to Slovenia.
Neither side could find a breakthrough as both began the new Nations League campaign with a point.
