The two BNP leaders were shown arrested in two cases lodged under the Arms Act and the Anti Terrorism Act when presented before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Syed Siraj Zinnat on Sunday afternoon.
Court Police's Prosecution Department Inspector Md Asaduzzaman told bdnews24.com the two were also accused in several cases of arson and sabotage.
Refat Ullah is also one of the accused in the 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse case.
Police had arrested Babu, the vice-chairman of the BNP’s Dhaka district unit, and Refat Ullah earlier on Sunday at Dhaka and Savar, respectively.
Asaduzzaman said six people were nabbed from a house at Savar where they had secretly met to plan acts of sabotage.
The two leaders had fled moments before, the police raid.
They were later arrested along with another man who had accompanied them to that meeting.
The other seven remanded on Sunday are ‘Mokhles’, Shariful Islam, Md Jahangir Alam, Manjurul Islam, Shahinul Islam, Ismail Hossain and Saidul Islam.
Savar Police Station OC Md Kamruzzaman claimed they had recovered a seized, 29 bullets, bomb-like materials and some Islami Chhatra Shibir booklets from the house.
Dhaka District Police’s Senior Assistant Superintendent Russell Sheikh earlier told bdnews24.com that Babu and Refat Ullah were arrested in several cases filed over arson and sabotage during the BNP-led alliance’s agitation.
During their blockade and shutdowns before the 2014 general election, a bus was set on fire in Savar leaving three people burnt. One of them subsequently died.
Savar police had filed a case over the incident and named Dewan Salahuddin Babu the prime suspect.
He was also named in several other cases filed over violence during the pre-election agitations.
The LGRD ministry had suspended Savar Municpal Mayor Refat Ullah after he was indicted in the Rana Plaza case.
He, however, took charge of office on Wednesday following a High Court order.
