She was driven away in a police vehicle around 9:15pm soon after she left the party Chairperson’s office.
But DMP Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com: “We did not arrest her.”
However, Shammi was seen being detained along with Multimode Group CEO Tabid Awal, son of BNP Chairperson’s advisor Abdul Awal Mintoo.
Mintoo had been arrested a month ago.
Earlier, around 8:10pm, police were seen putting Standing Committee member RA Gani in one of their vehicles when he was entering the party chief’s office. But he was not detained, the law enforcers said.
DMP’s Gulshan zone Assistant Commissioner Nurul Amin told bdnews24.com that they only ‘escorted’ Gani to his home.
Police seemed to be on a roll to pick up leaders of the main opposition party since the evening as they first detained former party MP Sarder Sakhawat Hossain Bokul from in front of Khaleda’s Gulshan residence.
Narsinghdi BNP unit has announced a general strike in the district protesting his detention.
Khaleda Zia had exchanged Christmas greetings with Christians in the evening at a function at her office. The police began taking actions before and after that programme.
