A statement released on letterhead of the party’s Research and Strategy Wing on behalf of Hajjaj made the claim on Friday.
Later, speaking to bdnews24.com, Hajjaj said, “There has been confusion as someone recently issued statement claiming to be the party’s spokesman.”
“So he (Ershad) sent this statement to the party activists and countrymen through me.”
According to the statement, the former President has decided not to go to polls as per the current election schedule.
“I am not sick. I have been detained for arrest,” Hajjaj quoted Ershad as saying.
He further said the deposed dictator had condemned the detention under the excuse of treatment.
Ershad had announced a boycott of the next elections a day after he and his party men had filed nominations.
The party’s two candidates applied to retract their nominations over the past two days.
On Thursday night, the former President was taken to CMH under RAB escort from his Baridhara residence
Younger brother and party Presidium member GM Quader said on Friday morning that he had spoken to Ershad at the CMH.
“He said he is still firm on not taking part in the imminent election. His directive to withdraw their nominations also stands.”
The BNP on Sunday alleged that Ershad had been “arrested” only because he did not agree on being part of the ‘unilateral election’
The statement quoted Hajjaj as being told by Ershad: “I did not appoint anyone as my spokesperson. I have heard that a leader (Mujiibul Haque Chunnu) is issuing statement as the party’s spokesperson.”
“If he has done so, he will also be responsible for that.”
“Party’s Secretary General Ruhul Amin Howlader and my brother and presidium member GM Quader will take directives from me and then reach them to the party leaders and activists.”
Ershad, the statement claimed, wanted to get his message across words through Hajjaj.
