The Dhaka North mayor aspirant’s car was attacked at the capital’s Tejgaon around 2am, his election office said in a statement.

The mayor candidate sustained injuries in his left hand and eye, according to the statement. His wife and driver were also injured, it said.

Mahi was taken to the United Hospital at Gulshan.

Police confirmed the incident near the BG Press at Tejgaon.

“We have been informed about the matter. They are under treatment. Steps will be taken once they lodge a complaint,” said Tejgaon police’s Sub-Inspector Shahida Akter.

Mahi told reporters at the hospital that he was returning to his Baridhara home after joining a chat show on a television channel.

“Around 8 to 10 men armed with sticks attacked our car as soon as we left the City Filling Station in front of the BG Press.

“They broke the windshields and one of the attackers started to beat me while trying to drag me out of the car,” said the Bikalpadhara Bangladesh leader.

Mahi said he had no idea who the attackers were, but claimed that he was told on Saturday to back-off from the mayor race.

He, however, did not say who had asked him to leave the polls.
