He called for a "greater movement to restore democracy" after paying homage at the Central Shaheed Minar marking the Shahid Dibas or Martyrs' Day on Tuesday.
"Democracy, which was the spirit of 'ekush,' is now lost. We will continue our struggle until democracy is restored," said the leader.
He came down hard on the government saying: "Both the Language Movement and the Liberation War were imbued with the spirit of democracy. Those in power today have betrayed the martyrs by destroying democracy."
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia paid floral tributes at the Central Shaheed Minar at 1:32am the day.
Mirza Fakhrul, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mahbubur Rahman, Jamir Uddin Sarker, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Abdullah Al Noman accompanied her.
