BNP seeks proposal for dialogue with govt

The BNP has asked the government to come up with a formal proposal for dialogue to end the current political deadlock.

“The head of the state has to give a formal proposal. Our policymaking body will then discuss the matter and take a decision,” party’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.

Amid the stand-off between Bangladesh’s major political parties over the caretaker government issue, various quarters have suggested a political dialogue between leaders of the two main parties.

Ruling Awami League has called for unconditional talks, while the BNP has been saying it would not sit for a dialogue unless the caretaker government provision was reinstated.

BNP leader Fakhrul alleged actually, the government did not want dialogue.

While on the one hand, ministers were talking of holding talks, on the other, the government was ‘continuously oppressing’ the opposition.

“The government does not want talks to end the [political] impasse,” Fakhrul said.
