Dhaka, Jan 22 (BDNEWS) – BNP lawmaker of Manikganj-4 constituency, former industries minister Shamsul Islam Khan (Naya Miah) breathed his last at the LabAid Cardiac Hospital Sunday noon. He was 76.
He was under treatment at the hospital for his old age complications and heart disease.
Khan is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters and numerous admirers.
President Prof Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, information minister M Shamsul Islam, Deputy Speaker Akhter Hamid Siddiqui, Chief Whip Khandaker Delwar Hossain, whips and former minister and lawmaker from Manikganj Harunur Rashid Khan Monnoo expressed deep condolence at the sudden demise of the former industries minister.
They in separate messages prayed for his departed soul and expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved family members.
Leader of the opposition in parliament and AL president Sheikh Hasina went to the house of late Shamsul Islam Khan and consoled his family members.
Late Shamsul Islam Khan was the first-ever lawmaker of the Manikganj-4 constituency in 1991 comprising Manikganj Sadar and Shingair thana.
He, later, was given the responsibility of the industries ministry as the BNP formed the government. He served as the industries minister from 1991 to 1996.
Besides, he was re-elected from the same constituency in 1996. He was also the president of one of the topmost club of the country Abahani from 1978 to 1982.
BDNEWS Manikganj correspondent reports: a pall of gloom descended upon everywhere in the district at the sad demise of the lawmaker.
Parliament secretariat sources said Shamsul Islam Khan would be buried after Johr prayers on Tuesday at the Banani Graveyard after his namaz-e-janaza in front of the BNP office on Monday at 10 am. It will be followed by four more separate namaz-e-janazas including one at the south plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) at 11 am.
