Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement at the party headquarters.
“The government has unjustly sent Khaleda Zia to prison. Peaceful protests will be held across the country tomorrow after the Jumma prayers. But the government must not try to instigate.”
Programmes for Saturday will be announced later.
“During a press conference on Wednesday, our leader asked us to stay away from violence. We will oblige,” said Fakhrul.
The five-year jail term for Khaleda over graft charges is nothing but an act of vengeance, the BNP alleged.
“The verdict reflects the prime minister’s vindictive nature. She did so to destroy democracy and establish her autocratic rule,” Rizvi told reporters at the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan.
He likened Hasina to a woman with “poison in her heart”.
“She has just spewed it.”
The court has convicted Khaleda of embezzling Tk 21 million in foreign donation for the Zia Orphanage Trust.
In the same case, Khaleda’s son Tarique Rahman and four others have been sentenced to 10 years in jail each.
