He died at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Thursday afternoon, said intensive care unit (ICU) physician Golam Mostafa.
He said Babul, 50, had been brought to the hospital at around 11:30am. His condition was critical at the time of his admission to the ICU.
“His wife said Babul used to drink quite frequently. It is suspected that he died of liquor toxicity,” the doctor said.
Babul’s wife Dipali Begum told bdnews24.com that he was addicted to alcohol but she was not sure whether he had consumed liquor Wednesday night.
Local leaders and activists of the party said Babul came to Arhani after receiving his certificate from Awami League's Rajshahi district unit office on Wednesday night.
He drank with his associates later in the night, they said.
He was taken to Bagha Health Complex when his condition worsened and then transferred to the RMCH.
Referring to his condition when he was taken to the Bagha Health Complex, Doctor Sirajul Islam said it seemed he might have drunk liquor.
Babul, a relative of State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, was a vice-president of Bagha Upazila Awami League. He used to live at Chaksinga of the municipality.
He had also run in the last election with the backing of the Awami League but had lost to the BNP-supported candidate.
Rajshahi district Awami League General Secretary Asaduzzaman Asad said the party nominated another candidate 'immediately’ after Babul's death.
The list the Awami League submitted to the Election Commission on Thursday afternoon names Md Muktar Ali as the party's Arhani municipality candidate.
