“I want your support. I will accept whatever happens. I am hopeful that results would go my way. I will fulfil my pledges,” He said in a press meet organised at a community centre on SS Khaled Road around 5pm on Tuesday.

Polling started at various centres of the port city around 8am. Only three hours later, Nasir’s key contender, BNP-backed M Manjur Alam, declared his withdrawal from the race, alleging widespread ballot manipulation and rigging.

bdnews24.com correspondents also saw centres being captured and ballots being stamped for Nasir.

His chief polling agent, district AL leader Moslem Uddin Ahmad, said, “Polls have been held peacefully in a festive mood. We thank the law enforcers for keeping the situation normal.

“We also thank the Election Commission. Results have not been declared yet, we will accept whatever the outcome.”

When asked about the BNP’s pullout, he said, “There was no assault or argument. Yet, he pulled out. This election was acceptable.”

The Awami League man claimed that Manjur made allegations of his agents being pushed out of many centres without even sending any representatives.

He also apologised for the morning attack on a journalist.

When journalists wanted to ask Nasir questions, the mayor runner took the microphone and said, “There is some confusion. Since the results are yet to be declared, I will not say anything.”
