In a condolence message, she said: “With this death, Bangladesh has lost an experienced, intellectual and sensible political personality. The vacuum that his death has created in this time of acute dearth of penchant and wisdom will not be filled up easily.”

Khaleda said: “I am profoundly shocked to get the news of President’s death from the media. I express my sincere sympathy to the bereaved people on behalf of myself and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).”

She sought salvation of his soul.

Referring to the distinguished political career of Zillur Rahman, the BNP Chairperson said: “His positive role during different (political) junctures will remain as a part of our national history.”

“He was soft-spoken and gentle and a good human being. He never made any aggressive and indecent comment on political rivals.”

Khaleda said she has been shocked at the government’s failure to officially announce the news of President’s death, send a minister to supervise his medical treatment, inform the nation of his condition through regular bulletins, and inform her of the news despite her holding a constitutional post like the Leader of the Opposition.
