Jubo League activist detained from flash procession near old Ganabhaban

Some 20-25 activists took part in a procession on the west side of the crossing near the former Ganabhaban around 2:15pm, police say

Police have arrested one person from a “flash procession” of members of the banned Awami League and its affiliates near the building that was previously known as the Ganabhaban in Dhaka.

Mohammadpur Police chief Mejbah Uddin said they arrested 40-year-old Jubo League activist Khokon Kazi on Friday afternoon.

Some 20-25 activists took part in a procession on the west side of the crossing near the former Ganabhaban around 2:15pm.

As they headed for Iqbal Road, a police patrol team stopped them, said the police officer.

The procession lasted for a minute following the police action, leading to Khokon’s arrest, said Mejbah, adding that the remaining marchers fled the scene immediately.

Khokon was holding a banner which carried a photo of former Mohammadpur councillor Tarequzzaman Rajib.

After former prime minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina fled to India on Aug 5, 2024 amid the student-led protests, the prime minister’s official residence was turned into the July Memory Museum.

During the interim government’s rule, several cabinet members of the ousted government and Awami League party leaders were arrested.

Hasina and other party leaders are being tried at the International Crimes Tribunal for alleged crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.

Until the trials are complete, all activities of the Awami League, its affiliates, and allied organisations have been banned.

However, Awami League activists and supporters have often held flash programmes in various parts of the country, leading to multiple arrests.
