Tarique Rahman, BNP's acting chief running for parliament from the Bogura-6 (Sadar), has filed an affidavit declaring assets worth approximately Tk 19.7 million.
Returning to Bangladesh on Thursday after more than 17 years in the UK, the 57-year-old leader also disclosed that he has faced 77 legal cases to date -- all of which he has been fully cleared of.
According to his income tax filings for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, Tarique Rahman earned Tk 676,353. In addition to Bogura, he has submitted nomination papers for Dhaka-17 (Gulshan-Banani).
The election law requires candidates to submit 10 categories of information in the affidavit, which can be publicised. The declaration confirms that Tarique currently faces no criminal cases, and he has systematically secured acquittal in 77 cases filed since 2004.
His income from shares, savings certificates, bonds, and bank deposits totals Tk 676,353. Cash and bank balances amount to Tk 3,158,428, while Tk 6,654,747 is held in his wife’s name. Tarique holds fixed deposits worth Tk 9,024,307, with his wife’s FDRs totalling Tk 3.5 million.
The affidavit also states that neither Tarique nor his wife or dependents have any liabilities, government dues, or loans. His total declared assets, according to the latest tax filings, amount to Tk 19.6 million, while his income for the year reached over Tk 676,000, with Tk 101,453 paid as income tax. His wife, physician Zubaida Rahman, declared assets of Tk 10.53 million and earned Tk 3.56 million last year, paying Tk 557,713 in tax.
Most of the 77 cases were filed in 2004, 2007, 2014, and 2015. Notably, a case under the 2007 Emergency Powers Ordinance was dismissed in April 2009. The largest number of acquittals -- 42 cases -- came during the interim government period following political change.
Other acquittals occurred between 2014 and 2022, including three in 2015, eight in 2016, six in 2017, four in 2018, five in 2019, and five in 2022.
