The BNP has expelled a local leader after a female lecturer was beaten with a shoe and several teachers assaulted during an alleged extortion dispute at a government college in Rajshahi.

The incident at Daokandi Government College on Thursday triggered widespread outrage after video footage of the assault spread rapidly on social media.

On Friday, the ruling party announced the expulsion of Akbar Ali, vice-president of the Joynagar Union unit.

In a statement signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party said the action was taken for conduct that had “breached party policy, ideology, and discipline”.

According to college authorities, a group of local BNP and Jubo Dal activists entered the campus on Thursday afternoon seeking money for the organisation of an upcoming Islamic gathering.

When the principal refused, an argument broke out and the group demanded to inspect the college’s financial records, officials said.

The confrontation turned violent when a female teacher began recording the dispute on her mobile phone.

In footage widely shared online, Shahadat Ali, identified as vice-president of the local Jubo Dal unit, is seen removing his shoe and repeatedly striking the lecturer.

The images prompted a fierce backlash online, with calls for those involved to be arrested.

College authorities said the group later returned with 40 to 50 people and stormed the principal’s office, damaging furniture and equipment.

The principal and four other teachers were assaulted as they tried to protect the campus. All five required medical treatment.

Despite the party’s disciplinary move, Akbar Ali denied involvement.

“I was only there because the police called me. I had no part in the scuffle with the lady or the destruction of the principal’s office,” he told reporters.

College authorities said they were preparing a formal police complaint alleging extortion, assault on a public servant and vandalism.
