A Dhaka court has sent three alleged Bangladesh Chhatra League members to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act following their arrest at Dhanmondi 32.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana rejected their bail petitions on Monday, defence lawyer Jahangir Alam said.
The accused are Md Sakib, a student of Mirpur Government Rupnagar Model School and College, Md Jihadul Islam Jihad of Hatiya Degree College in Noakhali and Raihan Rifad, a student of Rupdhan Bandar Amiria High School in Barishal.
Police arrested them around 5:30pm on Sunday while they were attempting to place wreaths at Bangabandhu’s portrait.
Investigating officer Sub-inspector Iqbal Ahmed Jinnah of Dhanmondi Model Police produced them before the court and sought their detention.
According to the case statement, they were identified during initial questioning as members of the banned organisation Chhatra League, the Awami League’s student wing.
The statement also alleged that they brought out a procession at the site and attempted to conspire against the interim government.
The case stems from an incident on Nov 30 last year at the Kazi Nazrul Institute in Dhanmondi, where Chhatra League activists allegedly chanted slogans and carried out propaganda against the interim administration.
SI Md Al Helal of Dhanmondi Model Police filed the case as the complainant.
