Indian and US military personnel have conducted a live fire demonstration involving the M777 Ultra Light Howitzer in Rajasthan as part of Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026.
The demonstration was intended to showcase the artillery capabilities and operational coordination between the forces, the Times of India reports.
Indian gun crews held the firing demonstration while the visiting US personnel later interacted with battery personnel at the gun positions to share operational knowledge and best practices on the battlefield.
The live firing demonstration followed by a lecture and demonstration on the deployment of the M777 on Wednesday. The session discussed the artillery system’s technical and tactical aspects, according to ANI.
Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026 is the 22nd edition of the joint military exercises between the US and India.
It began on Sept 15 and is being conducted over two weeks in Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, with around 600 personnel from each side taking part.
The Ministry of Defence says the exercise focuses on enhancing military capability on mountainous and semi-mountainous terrain with an emphasis on infantry operations.
The US military developed the M777 Ultra Light Howitzer, a 155mm, 39-calibre lightweight towed artillery gun.
Its design means it can be transported by military aircraft and helicopters, allowing greater mobility and flexibility for artillery in difficult terrain.
The M777 is part of the Indian Army’s 155mm fleet.
The US Army says the M777 has a range of about 24km with unassisted ammunition. Assisted projectiles can reach around 30km.
With the use of the M982 Excalibur precision-guided ammunition, the M777A2 can reach targets up to 40km away.
