Foreign tourist arrivals in India have risen by at least 10.6 percent last August, marking the highest growth in a single month in over two years.
Citizens from Bangladesh and China topped the list of visitors arriving in the country.
Citing preliminary data compiled by India's Ministry of Tourism, The Hindu's BusinessLine reported on Sunday that 625,000 foreign tourists visited India in August last year.
During the same period this year, the number of foreign visitors arriving in India rose to 691,000.
A sharp increase in the number of Bangladeshi tourists played a major role in driving this upward trend.
As a result, foreign tourist arrivals in India recorded double-digit growth for the first time since February 2024.
According to The Hindu, Bangladesh was considered one of the primary source markets for tourists in India up until 2023.
Despite recent political tensions between the two neighbouring countries, the number of Bangladeshi tourists entering India jumped by nearly 80 percent.
Preliminary figures reveal that over 74,000 people from Bangladesh travelled to India in August.
Alongside Bangladesh, visitor numbers from China doubled year-on-year, surging by more than 100 percent to exceed 9,000, according to data provided by the ministry.
The figures further showed that tourist arrivals from the United States and the United Kingdom also grew by 3 percent in August, whilst arrivals from Canada, Germany, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka climbed by 10 to 15 percent.
